Facial Fillers

As a part of the natural aging process many of us develop wrinkles on the face.  These wrinkles can be on the forehead or around our mouth or in the nasolabial area which is between the nose and mouth.  Aging can also cause loss of volume in the cheek area.  Dermal facial fillers can improve the appearance of all these areas and create a rejuvenated more youthful appearance to the face.  Or, perhaps you have naturally thin lips that you would like enhanced to a more voluminous appearance.

Facial dermal fillers are an injectable technique that provides effective relief of facial lines, loss of volume or enhancement to areas of the face.  Although the results are temporary with the effects lasting six months to two years, it is a quick, painless treatment that provides immediate results, there is no downtime following treatment and can be safely repeated.

There are many types of facial fillers and which one is chosen depends on the area being treated and the extent of rejuvenation required and include:
•    Restylane:  Typically used for fine to severe facial wrinkles from the nose to the mouth and can also be used to add volume to the lips.  Excellent filler for near the eye area.  This treatment can last for up to six months and be safely repeated.
•    Radiesse:  Containing larger particles than other injectable fillers, it can provide lift and volume when targeting moderate to severe areas of wrinkles.  Treatment typically lasts up to one year at which time it can be safely repeated. Lasts approximately two years.

JUVEDERM® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that adds hydration and instantly restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles.  Juvederm is composed of a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in skin, eyes and joints.  It instantly restores your skin’s volume and smooths away facial wrinkles and folds, like your “smile lines” or “parentheses”.  The procedure only takes about 15 minutes and results are immediate and it can last up to 1 year.

It is frequently used for volume restoration in areas such as:

Nasolabial folds (lines that extend from the corner of the nose to mouth)
Cheeks
Tear troughs (hollowness under the eyes)
Lips and vermillion border (lip border)
Smile lines
Marionettes (depression below corners of mouth)
Acne scars
Smoker’s lines

Juvederm is injected with a small needle and normally takes about 15 minutes.  A topical anesthetic or ice can be applied prior to injection.  In addition, Juvederm XC contains lidocaine, an anesthetic, which enhances comfort during an injection.

The most common side effects are mild to moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less).  The most common side effects are redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, lumps/bumps and bruising. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a small risk of infection.

Some medications make you more prone to bruising, so it is beneficial to avoid these medications for a week prior to your injections.  Examples of these medications include: aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications ( motrin, ibuprofen , naproxen), vitamin E,  fish oil and omega 3 fatty acids.  Please tell your practitioner if you are taking any of these medications.
